Working in policing throws up unique challenges and this can have a wider impact on the wellbeing of families.

Three-quarters of family members report feeling concerned about the wellbeing of a loved one who works in policing. Three in five say that balancing the demands of police work, partner careers and family life is a challenge.

The OK family life programme brings together resources and support for families and friends – including advice on living with a shift worker, nutrition tips for the whole family, and how to spot the signs of trauma and stress in a loved one.

Top tips for implementation

  • Link in with your corporate communications / internal staff engagement teams to create a communications plan to promote these in your force. The Oscar Kilo team has created a communications toolkit to help you do this.
  • Create an additional bank of your own, localised resources and build these into your communications plan.
  • Make the resources easily available via your force intranet, via your public facing website, or signpost to the Oscar Kilo website.
  • As part of your communication plan, think about the channels you have available to you in order to directly reach family and friends.
  • Share learning and best practice – maybe reach out to any neighbouring forces who may already be doing this well.
