Email newsletters

Forces already invest significant time and energy communicating with their workforce, usually via force intranets. Email-newsletters can be very cost-effective additional way of getting your messages across.

There is a wealth of content already produced in forces, some of which would be suitable for sharing with an adult family audience and potentially some of which may be suitable for children.

Forces could consider developing a family specific newsletter incorporating some of the content that already exists and sending a link out via email, the website and social media.

A newsletter could include a Q&A where the force responds to commonly asked questions or concerns.

Top tips for implementation

  • Set up a working group or hold a meeting to discuss content guidelines for the newsletter.
  • Agree what additional content may be required to ensure that the communication is relevant, engaging and appropriate for the target audience.
  • Find a way to gauge impact and engagement e.g. By including a competition, asking questions, or including other calls to action that can be tracked such as to content on your website or social media channels.
  • Pull together an example that can be demonstrated as part of the approvals process.
  • Consider how families will access the content. Will this be a pull or push offer? You may not want this content in the wider domain.
  • It may be possible to collect family email addresses at attestations for example.  If collecting data, you must ensure that you talk to your force Data Protection Officer and follow all guidance
