Fatigue impairs our ability to pay attention and form sound judgements. It also narrows our perception or ability to see the big picture, increases anxiety, irritability and hostility, all of which can lead to performance degradation. This means that when you are tired, you are more likely to miss or overlook important details, because your brain simply did not process it.

Policing is a profession that is vulnerable to reduced sleep hours and subsequent fatigue. There are many reasons for this, not least the fact that many of us in policing work shifts and unsocial hours. The good news is that there are things we can do to minimise the impact of fatigue.

This training will raise your awareness of the importance of and the mechanics of sleep, highlight the risks around fatigue, and guide you in promoting good sleep and mitigating the effects of fatigue.
