Social media

Your force social media channels are a fantastic way to reach family and friends of officers and staff more directly.

As part of a wider communications plan or strategy, these channels provide a real-time, two-way engagement platform to really help you get to know the family members of your officers and staff.

Social media allows you engage with family members in a more personal manner (as opposed to formal written communications or attestation ceremonies etc) and this can help to build trust and confidence in your force.

Campaigns

As part of your family engagement strategy, you could consider a social media campaign which will help you achieve the aims and objectives of that strategy.

Oscar Kilo launched the ‘Thank you’ campaign to recognise the support families, of all shapes and sizes, give to officers and staff.

This campaign is based on insight gathered directly from family members to understand some of the challenges policing families face.

We won’t solve all those challenges tomorrow, but one of the things we’ve heard is that a simple acknowledgement of how tough it can be, really helps. It helps people feel less alone, and more seen. Saying that it can be difficult, out loud, is the start of change.

That’s why, we’ve created a campaign designed to help police forces across the UK acknowledge the support of families.

There is video content, images, social media graphics and template copy you can use to make the campaign your own.

Top tips for implementation

  • Have a think about whether you want to use the Oscar Kilo campaign, or whether you’d like to create your own local version.
  • Link in with your corporate communications team to help you devise the campaign and supporting communications plan to promote it in your force.
  • Make any relevant resources easily available via your force intranet, via your public facing website, or signpost to the Oscar Kilo website.
  • As part of your communication plan, think about the channels you have available to you in order to directly reach family and friends.
  • Share learning and best practice – maybe reach out to any neighbouring forces who may already be doing this well.
