Fact file: Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder (previously called manic depression) is a condition involving extreme mood changes between mania and depression. These shifts are much more intense than everyday mood changes and can have a big impact on life.

Only a mental health professional can diagnose bipolar disorder. Your GP can refer you for assessment and support.

Mania

Manic episodes can seriously affect daily life and may require hospital treatment.

Symptoms include:

  • Feeling euphoric or invincible
  • Increased energy and activity
  • Reduced need for sleep
  • Racing thoughts or speech
  • Irritability or aggression
  • Risk‑taking or excessive spending
  • Loss of usual inhibitions

When to seek help

Bipolar disorder often requires ongoing treatment, including medication and talking therapies.
During depressive episodes, someone may feel suicidal or believe life isn’t worth living. In a crisis, they should not be left alone and medical help should be sought immediately.

  • Create a routine: Regular sleep, meals and medication times help stability
  • Manage stress: Use relaxation and self‑care strategies
  • Plan for a crisis: Decide in advance how others can help and who to contact

Bipolar UK and Mind offer helpful tools and guidance.

Tips to help someone else
